Becoming a parent is one of the most significant changes in your life! Having that little one in your life is magical but also overwhelming at times. They will take up most of your time, which is why lots of parents (moms and dads!) live day by day. Especially when you are a single parent, it is hard to make everything work. Organic Formula Shop is committed to giving back and supporting Single Parents!

As a Dutch company, with their much-appreciated customer/parent base in the US, they hope to give back to their country and community. The Dutch government financially supports single parents in the Netherlands so that studying and childcare can be combined. Many students in the U.S. rely on available scholarships when their finances are insufficient. For single parents, time and financial resources often cause their inability to complete their education. A degree can increase financial stability and the chance of a better future for a whole family significantly. The Team of Organic Formula Shop feels this is an important cause to contribute to.

In a nutshell, the Single Parent Scholarship by Organic Formula Shop is a student scholarship designed to support a single mother or a father. With this Scholarship, they hope to give college students a chance to earn cash towards their education.

To apply, please share your story and tell us about the challenges you face while being a parent and a student.

One of the most challenging parts about being both a student and a single parent is constantly feeling like there are never enough hours in the day. Every day requires balance, sacrifice, and careful planning. I am not just responsible for my own future; I am responsible for my daughter’s future as well. That means every decision I make carries extra weight because I have someone depending on me at all times. Balancing school, work, parenting, finances, and personal responsibilities can become emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausting, especially when there is no second parent or additional household support to help carry those responsibilities. As a single mother and sole provider, there are many moments where I feel torn between multiple roles at once. Some days I am a student trying to meet assignment deadlines, study for exams, and stay focused academically. Other days I am simply “mom,” helping my daughter with school, making sure she feels emotionally supported, attending school activities, or handling everyday responsibilities at home. On top of that, I work two jobs while pursuing my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at San Francisco State University because financially I do not have the option to focus only on school. Bills still need to be paid, food still needs to be on the table, and life continues moving regardless of how tired I may feel. One of the hardest challenges is the emotional pressure that comes with trying to succeed in every area without disappointing anyone. As a parent, you naturally want to give your child your full attention and presence. As a student, you also know that success in school requires focus, discipline, and time. Sometimes those responsibilities overlap in difficult ways. There have been nights where I stayed up late completing assignments after my daughter went to sleep because that was the only quiet time I had available. There have also been moments where I had to study during work breaks, between responsibilities, or while feeling completely drained mentally and physically. Financial stress is another major challenge that comes with balancing parenthood and higher education. The cost of tuition, books, transportation, living expenses, and everyday necessities adds up quickly, especially while raising a child alone. There are times when I have had to make difficult decisions between paying for school-related expenses and covering household needs. Even though I work hard, the reality is that balancing two jobs, parenting, and school still creates financial strain. It can sometimes feel overwhelming trying to build a better future while also managing the financial demands of the present. At the same time, being a mother is also my greatest source of motivation. My daughter is the reason I continue pushing myself even when things feel difficult. I want her to grow up seeing that hard work, resilience, and education can change the direction of your life. I want her to understand that obstacles do not have to define her future. Every class I complete, every late night studying, and every sacrifice I make is rooted in my desire to create stability, opportunity, and generational change for her. Growing up in a single-parent household myself also shaped how I approach life today. I watched my own mother work hard as the sole provider for our family, and although I now understand the sacrifices she made, I also remember how difficult life could sometimes be. Those experiences taught me resilience at a young age, but they also motivated me to create a different future for my daughter. I want her to grow up with opportunities, security, and support that may not always have been available to me. This scholarship would help me in more ways than just financially. Of course, receiving financial support would help relieve some of the stress that comes with balancing tuition, educational expenses, and the responsibilities of raising a child. It would allow me to focus more energy on my education and long-term goals instead of constantly worrying about finances. However, beyond the financial assistance, this scholarship would also represent encouragement and belief in my journey. As someone who is pursuing a career in law enforcement and public service, I want to use my education and experiences to positively impact my community. Growing up in an urban environment and witnessing many of the challenges affecting underserved communities inspired me to pursue criminal justice because I want to become part of meaningful change. My long-term goal is not only to work in law enforcement, but also to advocate for stronger community relationships, mentorship opportunities for youth, and support systems for women and families facing hardships. I also hope to eventually create a nonprofit organization focused on helping women, children, and underserved communities. I know firsthand how overwhelming life can feel when you are carrying responsibilities alone. Because of that, I want to create spaces where people feel supported, encouraged, and empowered to overcome obstacles instead of feeling trapped by them. Most importantly, I want my daughter to see what perseverance looks like in real life. I want her to know that success is not always about having the easiest path; sometimes it is about continuing to move forward despite challenges. I want her to understand that education, resilience, and faith in yourself can open doors that once felt impossible to reach. This scholarship would help pave the way not only for my future, but for my daughter’s future as well. It would allow me to continue pursuing my education with less financial burden while moving closer to the goals I have worked so hard to achieve. More than anything, it would help support a future built on stability, service, education, and the hope of creating lasting change for both my family and my community.

What I find most challenging about being a single parent in medical school is striking the balance between my studies and spending plenty of quality time with my children. While many single parents have the benefit of co-parenting with a former partner at least part of the time, I am my children's sole parent and exclusive provider. I am attending medical school and training to be a physician with the knowledge that my eventual career will create enhanced financial security for us and with the guiding philosophy that it is important for my children to see me succeeding in education and pursuing bettering myself despite challenges. However, it is not without sacrifice and difficulty. I see this scholarship helping us by providing a desperately-needed financial lifeline so that I can focus on studies with less worry about covering essential basics and making tuition payments. Each less hour spent on working to meet financial obligations is time that I can devote to them, playing, reading, and bonding. We have had to rebuild our family life after leaving domestic violence last year, which was both financially expensive and emotionally draining. Despite that adversity, the children are thriving, safe, happy, and resilient. They have made new friends and community in their school, and we are looking forward to the day that I start medical school in August. This will be a very special day for us as we each mark big milestones on the same day: my oldest child starting Kindergarten, my youngest son starting preschool, and me beginning medical school. Aside from my own passion for medicine, based in a love of science and a lifelong penchant for problem-solving combined with the desire to serve others, I am excited about the stability that this career can afford me and my children. I feel confident that once I have my medical degree in hand, I will be able to provide a secure life for us, including earning enough money to one day pay for their educations in turn. It is difficult to be a single parent and many times I have sacrificed meeting my own basic needs to ensure that my children have access to enrichment opportunities such as swim lessons and attending friends' birthday parties. I dream of a day when I am settled in my career and no longer feel stress and dread when the bills are due. I dream of my children having all of the same opportunities to grow into educated and well-rounded individuals that children growing up in dual-parent households can take for granted. With these funds, I can complete my degree and show my children that despite difficult circumstances, what we can dream we can achieve, as long as we are willing to work hard for it and remain adaptive. My children are the most important thing in my life and I am doing this just as much for them as for myself and my community. It has not been easy to leave family violence, navigate the family court system, keep my children safe, and attune to all of their needs (physical, health, emotional, social, spiritual, educational, and developmental) by myself. However, it is an honor to be their mother and I hope that I make them proud by prioritizing my education. I cannot wait to see their faces when I walk across the stage after earning my white coat.

The most challenging aspect of being a single mother of three boys and a college student is time management. Often times, I feel like I have to sacrifice one for the other at the moment. As a mother, I worry about the impact this has on my children and the events that I am missing as I can not attend many of their school functions while I am in school and trying to maintain my 4.0 GPA in my nursing program. However, I know that the sacrifices that I am making now to complete the Associate Degree in Nursing program at Kapiolani Community College will allow me to be able to be financially stable and provide a better life for my boys. Despite the time management issues, I have managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA for the last two semesters of my nursing school program. I have two more semesters to complete and then I am able to attempt the state licensure exam to become a registered nurse. My boys and nursing are my passion. I witnessed firsthand how influential nurses are and the impact that they have on families. My twin boys had to spend several months in the neonatal intensive care unit because they were born prematurely at 28 weeks. My oldest son suffers from asthma. One of the twins has situs inversus, and the other twin has Stage 2 Chronic Kidney Disease. I practically lived in the hospital during this time and was by his side for his next 13 surgeries and numerous other procedures so that he could avoid having to start dialysis or have a kidney transplant. During this time, I fell even more in love with medicine, especially nursing. I would not have been able to get through this difficult time if it was not for the nurses and their compassion. This reignited my passion and drive to go back to school and purse a nursing degree. I want to specialize in pediatric nursing because I want to provide the same care and comfort to other families and their children, like my sons and I received throughout their time in the NICU and even now through the various doctors appointments that my boys still have. Nurses are these amazing people that are able to be by our side to laugh and cheer during the good times and cry right beside us during the difficult times. My future career and my boys are what inspire me to keep going everyday. This scholarship will help me to continue my journey in nursing so that I can become a registered nurse, but also not have to stress as much about how to pay for college while I deal with their medical bills. I plan to continue in my education journey after completing the ADN program and attend University of Hawaii's bridge program from RN to BSN. After which, I plan on getting my Masters in Nursing Education and eventually, a doctorate in nursing practice and become a Pediatric Advanced Practicing Nurse. I know that if I continue on my education journey that I will be able to provide the lifestyle that I want to be able to give my boys. In addition, I hope that my boys see that no matter their circumstances, they can still achieve their dreams.

As a single parent and a student, I face numerous challenges on a daily basis. However, what I find most challenging is juggling the responsibilities of being a caregiver for my son, who has a disability, while also pursuing my academic goals. Growing up in foster care and experiencing poverty has taught me the importance of education and hard work. I am determined to provide a better life for myself and my son, and I know that education is the key to achieving that goal. However, as a single parent, it can be difficult to balance my academic responsibilities with my duties as a caregiver. One of the biggest challenges I face is finding adequate childcare for my son while I attend classes and complete coursework. My son requires specialized care due to his disability, and finding reliable and affordable care can be a struggle. Additionally, I often have to prioritize my son's needs over my academic responsibilities, which can lead to feelings of guilt and frustration. Despite these challenges, I remain determined to succeed. I know that by pursuing my academic goals, I am not only creating a better future for myself, but I am also setting an example for my son. I want him to see that anything is possible with hard work and determination and that his disability does not have to hold him back from achieving his dreams. This scholarship would be a tremendous help in paving the way for my future and the future of my son. With the financial support, I would be able to afford the specialized childcare and resources my son needs while I attend classes and complete coursework. Additionally, the scholarship would alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with being a single parent and a student. But more than just the financial assistance, this scholarship would provide me with the motivation and encouragement to continue pursuing my academic goals. Knowing that some individuals and organizations believe in my potential and want to support me in achieving my dreams is a powerful motivator. Furthermore, this scholarship would help me to achieve my ultimate goal of becoming a social worker. As a former foster youth who has experienced the cycle of poverty and abuse, I am passionate about advocating for vulnerable youth and families. As well as hoping to one day become a foster parent to help even more youth in need. With a degree in social work, I will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on the lives of others. In conclusion, the combination of being a single parent and a student is not without its challenges. However, with determination and support, I know that I can achieve my academic goals and provide a better future for my son, the community and youth I will serve, and myself. This scholarship would provide me with the financial support and motivation I need to continue pursuing my dreams, and ultimately make a positive impact in the lives of others.

The biggest challenge that I have faced is balancing the financial and time sensative priorities of parenthood with the priorities of higher education. I began my undergraduate education when my youngest daughter was six months old. I was completing the final class of the program when my other daughter was born. During much of this time, their father was deployed with the military and I had no financial or emotional support. Despite these barriers, I achieved what I set out to do; I completed my AABA and my BSCJ with an 3.89GPA and graduated with full honors and was granted the award of Magna Cum Laude. It has been seven years since I became a single parent, but many of the challenges have not changed. I did not receive any formal support for much of that time. All friends and family remained behind when I left to start life anew. The cost of daycare and other household obligations are taxing, and leave very little room to save and prepare for anticipated school costs. Even with this awareness, I have not allowed it to slow me down. I determined from the start that I would set an example for both of my daughters as a first generation college graduate, and I continue to maintain this focus within my current Graduate program. Despite working full time, managing an integrated team of professionals, serving as an advocate for regional behavioral health needs, and coordinating for care regarding my childrens' own behavioral health diagnosis, I have consistently and persistently used my own experiences in resilience and dedication to show my children that they are not limited by their immediate circumstances. The mixture of financial obligations and time limitation has been the largest barrier for me, but I will not allow this to slow me down. I currently have around $3,500 left to account for in regards to my upcoming semester. I anticipate that his amount will increase as I move into my Specialist Year of study. This will also initiate my required participation with fieldwork placement, impending my ability to explore secondary employment options to suppliment. For this reason, any scholarship funds I receive will be dedicated to covering all additional costs associated with completing my degree. As I work to instill the values of perseverence, resiliance, self-advocacy, and determination in my children, I actively communicate the lessons I learn and the solutions I develop so that they can grow with the guidance and example of someone who has struggled and succeeded despite overwhelming obsticals. This includes the process of scholarship hunting. I anticipate such barriers to only become more prevalent as my children age, and the statistical probability that they may also be limited by their life circumstances is always at the forefront of my mind. We live in a world that seems to become more disheartening with every year, and I worry about my children falling into the social and economic trap that their immediate circumstances may otherwise confine them to. I want them to know that there is always another option, and there is always another idea to seek out and try. Our current world seems to have very few examples to look up to when in need of hope. As I have struggled to find this myself, I will endure so that my children can learn from me rather than having to pave the way for themselves as I did.
